19th Century English Chinoiserie Ladies Secretaire Writing Table
$8,800.00
Extraordinary 19th century English ladies secretaire desk or writing table. The two part desk was made in the Chinoiserie revival period of Europe in the mid-19th century. The desk features a Japanned oak case embellished with highly detailed inlay depicting figures among pavilions and pagoda structures. The painted scenes are decorated with colorful mother-of-pearl inlay. The writing table surface is 30.25 inches high with a large storage drawer in the frieze. The table is surmounted by a superstructure centered by a locking door with cubbies inside. There are six small storage drawers flanking the center storage. All drawers and doors have brass lock plates and a key with round decorative pulls. The top is galleried with an arched or peaked top having similar inlay decoration. The table is supported by elegant cabriole legs in the Queen Anne taste. The desk has a stunning, dramatic profile and intricate details. Wonderful example of European orientalism that makes a strong focal point of any room. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
