18th Century Italian Baroque Carved Giltwood Picture Mirror Frame

An imposing finely carved early 18th century Italian Baroque giltwood mirror frame or picture frame featuring a dramatic pierced crest depicting a reclining nude nymph beneath a ornate foliate crown. The top is accented by scrolling acanthus, oak leaves, carved rosettes and garlands, and confronting eagle heads in high relief. The bottom of the frame is crafted with a carved maiden's head appearing to signify a season possibly spring among additional scrolling garlands and scrolling foliates. The sides of the frame are decorated with two large tightly closed flower buds in a spring motif. The frame is finished with a beautifully weathered gilt surface, softly worn to reveal the reddish-brown bole clay covering the wood, adding an exceptional warmth and depth. The dense but open sculptural piercings allow light to pass through the frame. Crafted in a striking blend of Baroque and Rococo styles, the piece is well-suited to a grand entry, mantel, or wall. The interior space for a mirror plate measures 21.5" wide and 28.75" tall. The overall dimensions are 40" inches wide by 55" inches high. The frame has authentic patina with old repairs and losses as expected given age and use. From an estate in Beverly Hills, CA purchased from Ellekilde Auction, Copenhagen, Denmark. Very impressive to view in person. Does not contain a mirror.
