Fantastic pair of 19th century Japanese late Edo/early Meiji period six-panel screens titled The seven sages of the bamboo grove. The Kano school screens depict a group of Daoist Chinese scholars, writers, and musicians from the third century CE. Ink and natural color pigments over a dramatic gold leaf square ground. Set in ebonized wood frames with a dark silk brocade border. Labeled on the back of one screen. Impressive pair of screens with vivid colors and beautiful gilt backgrounds made in the Kano school style.

Condition: Fair, minor wear consistent with age and use. Beautifully crafted with age appropriate wear and losses on backside. One panel is slightly separated, one large tear on left side as seen in photos.
