Pair of Swedish Venus Rising Urn Planters by Ivar Johnsson

Imposing and rare pair of cast iron urn planters or jardinaires designed by Ivar Johnsson (Swedish 1885-1970) for Nafveqvarns Bruk. The urns feature a large, thick cast iron form with an open bottom having removable drain grills. Each urn is relief decorated with an image of Venus and inscribed "Venus Stiger ur Hafvet" or Venus rises from the sea. These urns were crafted in the early 1920's and an example was exhibited at the Paris World Exhibition in 1925. The Greco-Roman neoclassical inspired design has scrolled handles on each side and a ribbon decoration around the foot. The cast iron has a patinated finish that has been painted black. Sold as a pair. From a historic estate in San Francisco, California.
