An elegant pair of late 19th/early 20th century French mirrors crafted in an exuberant Louis XVI Neoclassical style with Rococo influence. The elegant pair features substantial hand-carved wood frames executed in a beautiful gilt finish over a base of red bole clay. Each frame is crafted with classical silhouettes having serpentine pierced accents, floral sprays, foliate cartouches, and a flowing garland swag of carved leaves hanging gracefully from each crest. The bottom aprons of the mirrors are finished with pairs of intricate floral bouquet carvings. The surface has been wonderfully softened over time, resulting in a richly weathered patina with authentically accumulated wear and rich red bole showing through the gilt finish. The pair is backed by a secondary frame with hanging wire. The mirror plates have been recently replaced. The frames have a desirable aged and distressed patina as seen in photos. The remarkable pair is crafted in a grand Louis XVI/Rococo style, and is well-suited for a variety of classical or contemporary spaces on a wall, above a mantel, entry, console, or flanking a door. Sold as a pair. Provenance of a private collection in Hillsborough, California.
