An exceptional labeled set of four rare barrel-back dining armchairs made by McGuire artisans in San Francisco, CA. This distinctive older design is one of their more elusive styles showcasing the versatility of rattan and bamboo in a classic mid-century inspired design. Each chair is crafted out of bamboo and rattan pencil reeds joined together with hand-tied leather rawhide lacing. The chairs are crafted with a rounded barrel back, gracefully swooping back rails descending into arms, and bamboo pole legs joined by a X-stretcher. The back and seat galleries are constructed with ornately arranged rows of pencil reed instead of the more common delicate caned inset finish. The bamboo has acquired a rich honey patina over time with beautiful naturally variegated striations and figuring. Each chair is fitted with a loose seat cushion in a neutral woven fabric. The frames are sturdy and strong having excellent joinery and craftsmanship in exceptional well preserved condition as seen in photos. The set comes from a dry non-humid, mold free California climate. The pair is crafted in a distinct mix of Mid-Century Modern, Tropical, Organic Modern, and California Coastal styles, and are well-suited for use in a dining room, living room, or sunroom. The set retains original McGuire plaques on bottoms. Arms of chairs measure 26" tall. Sold as a set of four. From an estate in Malibu, CA.
