A monumental and rare signed 2015 ceramic stoneware winter urn floor vase crafted by Kristina Riska (Finnish b.1960). Known as a "Winter Urn" or "Bodypart Urn" the massive organic modern piece features two rounded bodies joined by a narrow waist, creating an immense and totemic hourglass silhouette. The piece opens at the top to a wide and everted mouth revealing an unglazed ceramic interior. The exterior of the piece is finished with with a dense vertical striation ribbing patterns running from the top to the bottom of the vase, giving the outside a subtle reeded texture. The surface has been finished with striations of dark charcoal-black over a matte, chalk white surface left unglazed, creating a sharp contrast of the chaotic and raw exterior with the quiet and simple interior. Executed on a massive scale measuring nearly 4.5' tall and crafted in a modern organic style, the substantial piece is well-suited for a variety of spaces. Signed and dated "KR2015" with an impressed seal. Kristina Riska was born in Finland in 1960 and is considered one of the most prominent ceramics artists of Northern Europe. One of Scandinavia’s leading contemporary ceramic artists, Kristina Riska is celebrated for her unorthodox large-scale works inspired by nature, light, and shadow. Riska graduated from Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design, and Architecture in 1984. Since then, she has been working in sculpture, consistently focusing on irregularly curvilinear ceramic vessels. Their empty interiors serve a symbolic—rather than practical—purpose as a meditative space within her works. Riska employs a laborious, time-consuming hand-building process, adding subtle textures to her ceramics with stencils and glazes she makes herself. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
