A striking abstract lithograph by Joan Miro (Spanish 1893-1983) for Robert Desnos’ surrealist text 'Les Pénalités de l’Enfer ou les Nouvelles-Hébrides" (The Penalties of Hell or The New Hebrides), identified as plate 16, edition 14/200. The work presents a bold field of emerald green, taupe, ochre, and lavender, presented in a black and gilt frame with a linen-textured mat. A white organic form containing a radiating sunburst motif is depicted across a richly mottled and textured ground with vivid coloring. The work belongs to Miró’s illustrated project for Robert Desnos’ "Les Pénalités de l’Enfer ou les Nouvelles-Hébrides", a 1974 portfolio comprised of 25 lithographs, printed on Arches paper and published by Maeght, Paris. The work is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, authenticated June 12, 2013 by Franklin Bowles Galleries, New York. The sight of the piece measures 14.75" wide by 10.75" tall.
