Late 19th century Edo period Japanese four panel folding byobu screen depicting four of the twenty-four paragons of filial piety. Beautifully painted in the Maruyama-Shijo style. The painting features four characters: Wang Xiang, Yang Xiang, Dong Yong, and Tang Furen. The screen is painted with natural ink and color pigments with intricate details. The top and bottom are embellished with dramatic gold leaf clouds. The painting is set in a black lacquered frame with a silk brocade in gilt. Good condition given age and use with minor fading and light stains as seen in photos. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
