17th Century Chinese Buddhist Temple Altar Censer
Monumental 17th century Chinese earthenware altar censer from a Buddhist temple. Featuring a large lidded body decorated with foo lion heads on each corner depicted with open mouths where smoke escapes. This thick glazed ceramic urn has openings on each side large enough for hands and holes to ventilate air in the sides. Several losses and old repairs with applied iron handles on each side probably added in the last 200 years. Beautiful and rare with a distressed craquelure finish.
