A charming 19th century Scandinavian Country Swedish Folk Art painted blanket chest, marriage chest, dowry chest, coffer, or trunk. The large chest is crafted from pine and retaining a beautifully hand-painted polychrome original finish and dated to 1867. The long rectangular case is raised on a simple plank supported base and fitted with a hinged top with iron strap hardware opening to a storage compartment. The façade of the chest is done in a deep forest green ground with three blue panels, each hand-decorated with vivid floral motifs. The sides are finished in a warm red tone, while the top and back retain the patina of the original natural organic pine. The interior lid is also dated and decorated with painted sapling motifs. The piece has a timeworn, authentic character with rustic Scandinavian Country Provincial folk art decorations. The chest was constructed on a large scale and has a generous storage compartment. The chest is suitable for use as a blanket chest, bed-end piece, coffee table, or a hall chest. There is no key available for the original lock plate. From an estate in the Napa Valley, CA.
