Fascinating late 19th century Japanese Meiji period four panel folding byobu screen. Made in the Nihonga school style with Rimpa school influence and bearing a Rimpa school seal Inen. The unsigned work painted after Tawaraya Sotatsu (Japanese 1570-1643) depicts flowering plants and grasses including Pampas grass (left) and bush clover (right). Ink and color natural pigments on hand-made mulberry paper set into a black lacquered wood frame with a gold silk brocade border. Beautifully painted with delicate artistry

Condition: Distressed, wear consistent with age and use. Beautifully crafted with solid joinery and construction. Age appropriate wear and fading with losses to middle at center fold as seen in photos. Reverse side has paper losses. Front painting is faded, but shows well with lovely detail.
