Japanese Showa Four Panel Screen Spring Flowers on Gilt

$6,800.00

Charming mid-20th century Japanese Showa period four-panel folding byobu screen featuring blossoming spring flowers over a bold gilt background. The painting depicts iris, camella, wild pinks, dandelion, and daisy with delicate and intricate brushwork. Ink and natural color pigments over gilt paper. The painting is set in a black lacquered wooden frame with a black and gold silk brocade border. The finish has a desirable aged patina with fading, light stains, and flaking that add to its aged character. The screen is solid with stable, strong joinery. The composition is based loosely on Rimpa style works by Sosetsu and painted in the Nihonga school style. The front has one old repaired small loss as seen in photos. From an estate in Malibu, CA.
