Pair of McGuire Chinese Chippendale Rattan Fretwork Armchairs

A beautifully crafted very rare pair of rattan library armchairs made in a Chinese Chippendale taste by by McGuire Furniture artisans in San Francisco, CA. Each distinctive chair features an elaborately carved, bent, and pierced lattice back. The design is centered on an octagonal medallion framed by geometric fretwork and dynamic, flowing carvings. The frame of the chairs is constructed out of bent rattan poles with a straight top rail and gracefully curved arms with inset fretwork galleries. The seats are crafted from woven raffia grasscloth set within an oak frame. The generous rattan pole seat apron is supported by straight legs conjoined by a box stretcher. The rattan is finished in a deep brown tortoise shell tone stain in varied colors, displaying the natural figuring of the rattan. The rattan poles are joined by leather rawhide lashings. The set comes from a dry non-humid, mold free California climate. Crafted in a mix of Brighton Pavilion, Chinoiserie, Chinese Chippendale, and Organic Modern styles, the pair is well-suited for a variety of interiors with a well-heeled profile. Original brass McGuire maker's plaque is located on the underside of the chairs. Arms of the chairs measure 27.25" tall. Sold as a pair. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
