Ira Yeager 20th Century Painting of French Anthropomorphic Woman

$18,000.00

A highly distinctive figural painting by Ira Yeager (United States, 1938-2022) signed lower left with the artist's nom-de-plume signature "Von Yeager". Executed on a large 5 Ft. square canvas, the whimsical painting depicts an anthropomorphic female figure in an 18th-century-inspired period costume, wearing an exaggerated black hat and holding a small blue-and-white teapot. Painted against a celadon ground filled with hand-painted French text. The theatrical figure features round pig features, rosy cheeks, and a direct gaze, wearing a richly colored costume in shades of red, cream, and warm ochre tones. Additional applied portrait medallions and fans surround the composition around the skirt and border. The speckled ground and French inscriptions add to the eclectic and surreal character of the work. The painting has a high gloss varnish and is finish with a wraparound black-and-gold speckled floral motif border instead of a frame, a nod to when Yeager could not afford frames for his works. The painting is executed in a distinctive eccentric style, blending Swedish Country, French Provincial, Folk Art, Bohemian, and Maximalist influences. The canvas is attached to a substantial frame with stretcher and wire for hanging. Exceptional well preserved condition as seen in photos. Signed "Von Yeager" with fictional date 1798.
