Chinese Export Gilt Coromandel Screen Manchurian Cranes

$3,800.00

Fantastic Chinese export four-panel lacquered coromandel screen featuring an idyllic pond landscape with eight red crowned cranes or Manchurian cranes. In Taoism the Manchurian crane is the symbol of longevity and immortality. The cranes are depicted on a dramatic gold leaf square background under an autumn Japanese maple tree. The panels are supported with straight legs ending with patinated brass feet. The beautifully crafted panels are incised and painted with natural color pigments. The reverse side of the folding screen depicts four flora and fauna scenes in stark contrast to the gilt front side. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
