Pair of English Georgian Gainsborough Leather Library Armchairs

Extraordinary pair of 19th century English Georgian style mahogany Gainsborough library armchairs. The chairs feature full sized mahogany frames having a classic flat back with a serpentine crest and peaked corners. The generous seat has wide padded armrests measuring 26.5 inches high. The chairs have been upholstered with dark British green leather hides which have aged and faded into a charming Napoleonic green with a lovely aged, desirable patina. Beautifully crafted with strong solid joinery. The leather is bordered on the seat and back with patinated brass tack nail heads. The front legs and arms are reeded with the latter having decorative carved rosettes on top. Also known as a Martha Washington chair or a lolling chair. From an estate in Napa Valley, CA.
