Spanish Baroque Style Vargueño Cabinet Desk on Stand


Exceptional late 19th century Spanish vargueño cabinet desk or chest on stand. Featuring a carved walnut case with brass metal strapwork, side handles, decorations, and lock plates. Also known as a bargueño or escritorio. This campaign style cabinet was used as a portable desk with a hinged desktop. Made in the Baroque taste the case opens to reveal a large 18 by 42 inch writing surface supported by slides decorated with gothic gargoyle style faces. There are seven fitted storage drawers inside supported by carved, turned columns. The trestle base has turned spiral supports on each side conjoined by a columned stretcher ending with shoe feet. Original key included for front lock plate. From an estate in Santa Barbara, CA. Writing surface or desktop measures 32 inches high.

Condition: Good, minor wear consistent with age and use. Excellent joinery and craftsmanship with age appropriate wear. Minor faded finish on top and base as seen in photos.
