Set of Ten Josef Hoffmann for Wittman Villa Ast Dining Chairs
$9,800.00
An elegant and sophisticated set of ten "Villa Ast" dining chairs—originally conceived around 1910 for the Villa Ast in Vienna. The rare chairs were designed by Josef Hoffmann and expertly produced by Austrian manufacturer Wittmann and are iconic examples of Vienna Secessionist and early Modernist design. Each chair is constructed with a modern ebonized beech frame, gracefully curved arms descending from the barrel-back profile, and an open geometric back. The design is composed of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal elements forming a striking diamond back splat. The ebonized frames are finished in a deep satin black lacquer. The seats are upholstered in a woven beige textile with piped edges having small geometric accents in an subtle orange tone. The chairs are crafted in a modern Vienna Secession and Art Deco profile, well suited for a variety of interiors. The chairs are sturdy with solid joinery and construction. The finish is lightly aged with minor scuffs and light marks from use. The chairs retain original brass maker's plaques reading “Hoffmann made by Wittmann Austria.” Sold as a large set of ten chairs. The arms of chairs measure 28" tall. From an estate in Hollywood, CA.
