Moorish 18th Century Spanish Vargueño Cabinet Desk on Stand


Sublime 18th century Spanish vargueño cabinet desk or chest on stand featuring dramatic Moorish arabesque inlay designs. Also known as a Bargueño or escritorio this campaign style cabinet was used as a portable desk with a hinged desk top. Originating in Spain from the 16th century through the 18th century these chests were richly decorated. This chest features inlay of bone, silver, and marquetry depicting flowers around the case and in the interior. The front of the case opens to reveal 9 storage drawers and a Moorish door which conceals 3 more drawers. Iron lock plates and hinges decorate the cabinet with handles on each side. The desk top is 33 inches high when open. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
