English George III Style Lacquered Chinoiserie Secretaire Bookcase

Stunning Italian Chinoiserie secretaire bookcase crafted in the English George III taste. Beautifully decorated in the Chinoiserie revival period of mid-19th century through early 20th century in Europe. The tall two-piece case features a dark green lacquer ground embellished with idyllic Asian scenes in parcel-gilt. The picturesque reserves are painted in moriage (raised pigment) style with a beautifully aged patina and craquelure on the finish. The top case has a double-arched corniced crown over a two-door cabinet. Inside is a fitted three-shelf storage area with large Asian characters on the doors. The bottom chest has a slant front or drop front opening to a painted writing table with pigeon hole storage and two drawers. The case has bombe-style flared sides with two large storage drawers supported by cabriole legs ending with scroll feet and shaped serpentine aprons. The bookcase has a dramatic profile with a rare green japanned lacquer finish and Venetian Chinoiserie scenes that provide a strong vertical anchor point in a room. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
