Dramatic Chinese export Coromandel screen featuring a large phoenix crafted from painted mother of pearl. The four-panel screen has a black lacquer ground with parcel gilt geometric borders making a round window frame. The center is decorated with flowers, leaves, and birds with a large colorful phoenix having a long plume. The mother of pearl is carved and incised intricately then painted with a pearlescent finish. The reverse side of the screen has parcel gilt decoration of flora and fauna on each panel.
