17th Century French Baroque Polychrome Madonna and Child

Extraordinary polychromed 17th century French baroque Madonna and Child sculpture. Large carved statue carved from a single column of wood which was hollowed out in the back for weight and to reduce cracking in the wood. Gracefully flowing robes were mostly covered with linen and gesso, then painted by an artist. The linen was embellished with colored pigments and gold leaf with a lovely floral and foliate design over a dramatic dark blue ground. The figures are complete and not missing any pieces. The faces are beautifully depicted with serene expressions. The Madonna is mounted on a swirling cloud form base. The finish is aged and distressed with losses that add to its character. From an estate in Santa Barbara, CA.
