18th Century Swedish Gustavian Two Part Painted Secretary
$18,000.00
Grand late 18th century Swedish Gustavian period two-part secretaire cabinet or bookcase crafted from pine and beech. The substantial case has a gracefully curved or arched pediment with cornice. The top is fronted by two large doors opening to a shelved bookcase. The interior is painted with a 1783 date on one of the doors. The bottom case has a slant front opening to reveal a large writing surface area of 29 inches by 49 inches. The interior is fitted with numerous small storage drawers having dovetail construction. The bottom of the case has a large storage area with one fixed shelf. The secretary features an aged, faded painted finish in a dove grey or oyster tone. The entire piece is crafted with 1 inch thick beech on the case making the cabinet very heavy and solid. Appears to have the most of the original hardware with some newer pieces and repairs. The top is beautifully constructed and disassembles for transport. Period piece with an aged farmhouse aesthetic. Rare size and scale.
