Japanese Meiji Two Panel Screen Birds Flowers in Autumn Landscape
$3,800.00
Exceptional 19th century Japanese two-panel late Edo Tokugawa\early Meiji period screen. The painting features clusters of flowering autumnal chrysanthemums and field grasses amid quail, wagtail, and sparrows. The serene landscape scene has Kano school influence and brushwork. The floral and foliate rise organically from a gently suggested stream bank, their forms rendered with delicate natural mineral pigments in soft whites, muted greens, and touches of coral and ochre. Ink and color on paper with gold leaf and latter added gold flecks. The white chrysanthemum flowers are executed in a moriage or raised pigment style. The brushwork is both precise and atmospheric, allowing each bloom and leaf to feel quietly alive without overwhelming the composition. Quail, Wagtail, and Sparrows are placed with intentional restraint: a small grouping in flight across the upper register, balanced by ground-dwelling birds nestled among the foliage below. The painting appears to be done by "machi-eshi" or a town painter emulating a Kano school artist style. The painting has a beautifully faded, darkened patina as seen in photos commensurate age and use. The flowers are vibrant and colorful over an aged gilt ground. The painting has a description label on the back. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
