Opulent pair of rare commodes or chests of drawers crafted from polished coconut shell veneers by Maitland-Smith. The ebonized wood cases are fitted with 5 storage drawers on the bow fronts. The drawers are covered with an acid etched bronze style veneer reminiscent to the iconic pieces by Philip and Kelvin Laverne. The drawers have round ring pulls with lion's head motifs in a patinated bronze finish. The drawers are surmounted by a large pull out writing table secretaire. The chests are supported by gracefully splayed bracket feet. The chests are sturdy and strong with excellent joinery and craftsmanship. The smooth shell veneer has an amazing polished finish. Makers brass plaques on the insides of the drawers. Sold as a pair in very well-preserved condition.
