English George III Style Chinoiserie Lacquered Secretaire Bookcase


Gorgeous English secretaire bookcase made in the George III taste featuring a black lacquer Japanned case decorated in the chinosierie revival period of the early 20th century Europe. The two-part secretary has a broken pediment cornice on the top case over two decorated doors. The doors are attached with shaped Asian style iron hardware and lockplates. The doors open to reveal asymmetrical staggered shelves. The lower case features a fall front or drop front slant desk measuring 36 inches wide and 13 inches deep. The desk is fitted with numerous pigeon hole storage openings. Below the desk is five large storage drawers. The case features whimsical painted Asian scenes in parcel gilt. The lacquer is painted in a moriage (raised pigment) style. Decorated on three sides and interior with boys at play and beauties in an idyllic pagoda pavilion landscape. The lacquer finish has a beautifully aged patina. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
