English George III Style Chinoiserie Lacquered Secretaire


Late 19th century English chinoiserie secretary bookcase made in the George III taste. Two part secretaire hand painted with a polychrome gilt lacquer finish. Decorated in the chinoiserie revival period of the mid-19th century through the early 20th century Europe. The sides features flora and fauna landscape scenes and the front is adorned with idyllic court scenes with figures and pagodas. The top has an 18th century George III style broken pediment centered with a ball finial. The two front cabinet doors open to an interior with asymmetrical cubby shelves. The lower portion features a drop front desk with a fitted interior and pigeon holes. The bottom has 5 drawers with George III style swan neck bail pulls. From an estate in Bel Air, CA.
