Chinese Export Lacquered Gilt Coromandel Screen Cranes and Ducks

$2,800.00

A rich and dramatic Chinese Export folding four-panel double-sided coromandel screen executed in radiant gilt and lacquer. The front depicts a beautiful composition of a flowering tree with red and white blossoms rising from a rocky shore with a red-crowned crane and pairs of ducks. The colorful composition is set within an upper band of Chinese collectible scholar's objects and a lower band depicting four striding Qilin (a Chinese unicorn-like mythological creature representing good luck). The outside is framed by a border of stylized crane roundels and geometric gilt medallions. The hand-painted composition is imposed onto a brilliant gilt and lacquer surface with a beautifully aged, variegated surface containing a warm reflective quality and tonal changes from hand-crafted construction and age. The reverse side is articulated with a more subtle composition of birds, branches, and flowers over a black lacquer ground. The screen stands on rectangular legs fitted with patinated brass foot caps. The screen works beautifully as a room divider, art display, statement accent piece, or to anchor a room with warm color. Each panel measures 16" wide for a total width of approximately 5 and 1/3 feet. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
