Asian Showa Four-Panel Screen Herons Amid Lotus and Peonies

$8,800.00

A dramatic large 20th century Asian four-panel folding screen measuring 6 feet high and wide. The screen features a richly detailed hand-painted composition over a gold-leaf ground mounted to board. The serene scene depicts a calm waterside landscape with large lotus leaves, wading birds, flowering peonies, perched songbirds, and a craggy rock formation arranged across a warm gold-leaf field. Leaved branches arc across the upper portion, while the lower is animated by cool celadon and jade tones in the lotus pond. The screen's palette is tranquil and refined, consisting of tones of gold, verdigris, celadon, rose, cream, coral, and pale yellow, contained within a dark lacquered wood frame. An Asian calligraphic signature, cyclical date of winter 1930 (kanoeuma/gengwu), and red artists seal are present on the left panel. The elegant screen is functional as a room divider, wall piece, or as a decorative art piece. The ink and natural mineral color pigments are painted on to a gold-leaf square background with a desirable faded patina on the finish. The painting is mounted to board in the fashion of Gracie Chinoiserie wallpaper panels. The screen appears to be Chinese or Korean painted in the Japanese manner and style. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
