A rare an opulent pair of matched and signed French Louis XVI style commodes, dressers, or chests of drawers by French cabinet maker Rene Trotel born in Brittany, France 20th Century. Each chest features a substantial case measuring over 4 feet wide topped with a dramatic variegated marble top. The cabinets are detailed with rounded fluted corner pilasters, paneled sides, molded drawer dividers, and tapering turned legs ending in small brass sabots. The grand design taking inspiration from late 18th-century French Louis XVI style. Each is configured with a drawer arrangement consisting of three smaller drawers across the upper register above two long storage drawers below. The drawer fronts are framed with raised moldings and fitted with decorative bronze ring pulls and central key escutcheons. The commodes are surmounted by thick rectangular marble tops in variegated gray, taupe, brown, cream, and white tones with shaped conforming edges and corners. The chests showcase amazing woodgrains of walnut and fruitwood on the drawer fronts. The commodes are heavy with solid joinery and construction in exceptional condition as seen in photos. The drawers and pulls operate smoothly as intended. The cabinet maker has signed the cabinets with a brand on the back R. Trotel. The pair is well suited for use as dressers, flanking a fireplace or entry, nightstands, or storage. Two keys are included. Sold as a pair. Rare to find a matching pair bench-made by one cabinet maker on a grand scale. Very impressive with a classic French profile and provenance.
